Originally developed by The Air Ministry as The RAF Enigma with Type X attachment, the name was later changed to Typex. There were a number of versions produced, including a portable version. The machine had five wheels, the three on the left stepped in Enigma fashion and could therefore be wired to emulate the German Service Enigma. The other two right hand wheels were settable but did not step. A version with a pluggable reflector existed and a Stecker board was added later.
